We are used to harvest in fall what we cultivate in spring. But why not grab your tools and take advantage of falls temperatures to get the second harvest? There are some advantages if you start gardening in fall: pests are gone and the soil will be organic improved because of the second harvest.. Here are some vegetables that are grown in fall for a double harvest and a plentiful year-end.
Beetroot is easy to grow and it’s growing smoothly despite of the weather fluctuations. You can use both root and leaves to salads or pickles, being an important source of vitamins A and C. Cultivate them at a considerable depth to protect them from a possible early frost and don’t let it grow higher than 8-10 centimeters because the root becomes woody.
Another vegetable full of qualities is broccoli, rich in vitamins and minerals and very resistance to pests. Take advantage of the moderate temperatures outside to cultivate broccoli because it loves falls and springs coolness to develop harmoniously. You can grow them indoors, in containers, in August-September then move them outside.
Cabbage is another vegetable which loves low temperatures. Cultivate it in moist soil and maintain it wet regularly, but don’t overdo it. It takes 2-3 months to get a new crop so, depending where you live, calculate the ideal time for sowing. Kale cabbage and cauliflower are two other options for a fall harvest.
Carrots are also on the list of fall vegetables. To collect the second harvest in late fall, it’s advisable to cultivate in late July.
Also, radishes are great to cultivate in the rainy season, especially because they develop very quickly, in some cases even three weeks after cultivation. If you choose black winter radish, then keep in mind that the plant needs between 30 and 55 days to develop.
